Google did not stop being a search engine, but it stopped behaving like one. For 25 years it indexed the internet so you could explore it yourself. Now an AI layer sits on top, answering the question before you ever reach the results, and by mid 2026 that layer was appearing in roughly 43% of searches. A lot of people have seen the AI summary and know it matters, but cannot make sense of what it actually means. This is what it means.
The shift: old Google handed you the map of the internet and let you explore. New Google meets you at the door, asks what you want, and gives you the answer.
The old Google was like walking into a library. All the books were there, you picked one, you searched through it, you read, and you decided on your own.
You googled something, you got ten results, and you went through them. You decided what was relevant, what you trusted and what you wanted to do with the information. You did all the work. The finding, the comparing, the judging of what was true and what could be trusted.
And that gave you room to stumble onto people and ideas and concepts you were not even searching for, because you were exploring. Google’s only job was indexing what was there. As a business owner, your job was to be found by Google, and you did that with search engine optimisation.
The mental model almost everyone still carries is that Google is a search engine. It simply is not one anymore.
Now it is more like you go to the library, but somebody meets you at the door before you go in and asks what you want. You have a query, you want to know something, and instead of being able to walk in and go through the books yourself, Google hands you the answers. You are never really inside to look for yourself.
That is what Google does now. It searches for you, it analyses, it synthesises, and it gives you its version. So you get a first draft, a perspective, a rough cut. What you do not get is the shelf, with all the sources on it, that you can weigh and judge on your own.
This flipped fast, almost overnight, and it is a massive change for everyone. For business owners, but also for parents, for anybody. It changes how we find information, how we use it and how we understand it.
For us as business owners, it means our potential clients have an even harder time finding us. With SEO you had to take it seriously to be found, but once in a while you got lucky. You wrote a great blog post, or you had a great podcast interview, and you appeared in the searches. Now you consciously have to design it.
When your clients can no longer walk into the library and discover everything that is there, and instead get one answer that comes from AI directly, the question we have to ask ourselves changes. How do I influence that answer? How do I get AI to reply to my client saying that this person is the expert you should work with, that this person has a framework that could work for your business?
Experts are no longer discovered the way they used to be. People do not stumble upon you anymore, because they cannot. There is no second page that will save you. AI does the research on the person’s behalf and decides who counts as a trustworthy answer.
The good news is that you can engineer this. You can be the trustworthy answer. But the bottom line is that AI says: here is who I found, here is what I know about them, and here is who I recommend. If AI does not read you as credible, you are simply not the answer.
With Google there was still a page two. People said you are invisible on page two, which is not completely true. It is true for the most part, because most people sift through page one, but some still click through, and you had a chance to be discovered. With AI it does not work like that. AI either mentions you or it does not.
Search behaviour has changed that much, and this is how people search now. Nobody is going to run 20 searches. If AI finds an expert it trusts, your client goes down the rabbit hole with that name. What did this person do? Why can I trust them? Give me proof, give me clients, give me frameworks. They have that entire conversation with AI before they ever reach out to you.
That is exactly why we need to build trust signals online, and the biggest trust signals are being on podcasts and being in the media.
Back in the SEO era, you could rank without doing PR. It was much harder, because backlinks were a big thing, and they still are, even bigger now. But with great content you could get there somehow, especially if you had a bigger audience, a lot of clicks and a lot of traffic.
That is not possible anymore. AI lets everybody create polished expert content, which means AI can no longer distinguish who is an expert and who is not based on the content alone. So it relies on third-party signals and third-party endorsements instead, and those are the trust signals.
When somebody has you on their podcast, when the media speaks about you, or when you write an article for a publication, that is what AI reads as a trust signal. Which is why your job now is to learn how to build them, and to actually implement it in your business.
Yes. The classic results page still exists and is still the default, and Google has confirmed that AI Mode is not the default experience in Search. What changed is that an AI layer now sits on top of it. AI Overviews appeared in roughly 43% of searches by July 2026, up from about 15% a year earlier, and the conversational AI Mode has grown quickly since it launched in the US in May 2025. The library is still there, but more and more people are handed an answer before they walk in.
The work moved from you to Google. When an AI Overview answers your question, you get a first draft, a perspective, a rough cut, rather than ten results to compare and judge for yourself, and you no longer see the full shelf of sources behind the answer. That changes how people find, use and understand information, and it means fewer of them ever click through to the sites the answer was built from.
No, and that is the significant part. With Google there was still a page two, and although people said you were invisible there, that was only mostly true, because some people did click through and you could still be discovered. With AI it does not work that way at all. AI either mentions you or it does not.
Because AI lets everybody produce polished, expert-sounding content, so content alone no longer tells AI who the real expert is. In the SEO era you could rank on strong content without doing PR, especially with a big audience and a lot of traffic, but that route has closed. AI now leans on third-party endorsements to work out who is credible.
By building trust signals that come from other people rather than from you, because AI decides who counts as a trustworthy answer before your client ever contacts you. The biggest trust signals are being on podcasts and being in the media, whether that is being interviewed, being written about, or writing an article for a publication yourself. This is something you can engineer deliberately.
Your job now is to really understand how marketing changed in the time of AI, and to learn how to do this and implement it in your business, if you want to stay visible, stay relevant and be trustworthy.
We are in a trust recession, and trust is only going down further because of AI. So you have to find a way to build instant trust, with AI and with your audience. Want to learn how? Join the AI Visibility Lab, it’s free!

I work with founders, CEOs, and established entrepreneurs to build real authority through strategic media, top-tier podcast interviews, and Google-verified credibility. I’ve been where you are now, and not only have I spent 23+ years inside the media industry as a former journalist and PR consultant—learning how visibility, trust, and authority actually work—but I’ve also built and scaled my own business in the coaching industry for over 12 years using SEO and PR long before “personal branding” was a buzzword. I’ve made the mistakes, tested what actually moves the needle, and distilled it all into my proprietary frameworks: the Visibility Triangle™ and the Publicity Rockstar™ Method.
